Dr. Wolfgang Ziegler
Research and development Services
z-rands is the company I founded 2014 for professional spare-time-work outside my employment at Fraunhofer, like working as expert for ETSI or for the European Commission. I am computer scientist with more than 45 years experience in ICT covering domains like IT service, research and developement, and standardisation.
I made my first professionel ICT experience in the 1970s as a student research assistant at IBM’s Scientific Centre in Heidelberg while I studied physics in Heidelberg. Funny enough, this was my first exposure to virtualisation which became important for me again after decades.
Later I abandoned physics and continued my journey towards informatics as system administrator in the data center of the Mannheim University with punchcards and mainframes, then I joined the system administration group for the mainframes of the the German national research center for mathematics and data processing in Sankt Augustin (GMD). As the data centres evolved towards cluster-based computing I focused on distributed computing and high performance parallel computing with massive parallel computers. Meanwhile, GMD had been merged with Fraunhofer and the next stage was centered around different aspects of resource management and sharing, first as Grid computing and then Cloud computing.
In 2020 my contract with Fraunhofer ended and I continue my professional work with z-rands since then.

Non-exhaustive list of achievements until today
I like educating students and always tried to integrate them in project-specific research and development as a base for their respective theses. Also, most publications and talks are resulting from the work in projects. In contrast, contributing to panels is most often not directly relaated to projects but stems from my experience gained over years. I appreciate supporting the advancement of science as a reviewer of conference papers and journal articles. Finally, for me it is always pleasant to use the opportunity of joint research to organise events like workshops and seminars together with colleagues.

European and German projects
While I worked for Fraunhofer I initiated and participated in a number of European and German projects which are briefly described in the following tabs.
European co-funded projects
GridLab (January 2002 – December 2004)
Grid Application Toolkit and Testbed
GridLab is a combined research and development project to develop an innovative and flexible grid application toolkit, which will provide core, easy to use functionality through a carefully constructed set of generic APIs for both simulation codes and Grid software.
This toolkit will contain independent modules for handling many different aspects of Grid programming. Grid- enabled applications will be tested on real testbeds constructed by linking a heterogeneous collection of supercomputers and other resources spanning Europe and the US. The primary testbed environment for the project was created last year by the Applications Working Group of the European Grid Forum for demonstrations at SC2000.
I was one of the founders of the European Grid (EGrid) that merged with the Asia Pacific Gid and the US Grid Forum in the Global Grid Forum 2001. As such Fraunhofer SCAI participated as external partner in the GridLab testbed with one of its Computing Clusters.

CoreGRID Network of Excellence (September 2004 – August 2008)
European research network on foundations, software infrastructures and applications for large scale distributed, grid and peer-to-peer technologies
CoreGrid was a challenging and successful project bringing together scientists from leading edge universities and research centers active in Grid technologies. It was one of the first projects under the new funding scheme Network of Excellence (NoE) and was definitely the largest network under this funding scheme.
CoreGrid is organised along 6 virtual institutes:
- Knowledge and Data Management
- Programming Models
- System Architecture
- Grid Information, Resource and Workflow Monitoring Services
- Resource Management and Scheduling
- Grid Systems, Tools and Environments
and has 3 additional work packages for horizontal activities supporting all institutes
- Collaboration Gateway
- Spreading Excellence
- Integraton activity
CoreGRID aims at strengthening and advancing scientific and technological excellence in the area of Grid and P2P technologies. To achieve this objective, the Network brings together 119 permanent researchers and 165 PhD students from 42 institutions of more than 20 countries.
An ambitious joint programme of activity will be conducted around 6 complementary research areas that have been selected on the basis of their strategic importance, their research challenges and the recognised European expertise to develop next generation Grid middleware, namely: knowledge & data management; programming models; system architecture; Grid information and monitoring services; resource management and scheduling; problem solving environments, tools and GRID systems.
To ensure durable integration, the Network is operated as a European Research Laboratory having 6 institutes mapped to the areas identified in the joint programme of activity. It is funded by a European grant assigned to CoreGRID, for a duration of 4 years, to cover the integration costs while the network partners cover the expense required to perform the research associated with the joint programme of activities. Integration is achieved by the joint execution of research projects, the sharing of a common grid testbed for research assessment, the access to a common communication infrastructure to ensure collaboration and dissemination, and a coherent management framework to encourage mobility of researchers, post-doctoral and PhD students.
To guarantee that the expertise and the knowledge gained by Network participants will be of mutual benefit to the European Grid community, CoreGRID will organise a set of activities to spread excellence outside the Network such as a public web site, publications, thematic workshops, conferences and training activities. A dedicated activity, under the form of an Industrial Advisory Board, will target mainly industry and commerce to ensure a strong interaction and involvement.
Framework Programme: FP6-IST – Information Society Technologies: thematic priority under the specific programme “Integrating and strengthening the European research area” (2002-2006).
Phosphorus (October 2006 – March 2009)
PHOSPHORUS was a follow-up project on a European level of the German VIOLA project. As in VIOLA our focus was on the development of Grid middleware (UNICORE) extensions and the metascheduling system (MSS) to provide services for SLA Based Resource Orchestration using UNICORE. Additionally, in Phosphorus we developed and implemented a semantic layer that allowd automatically matching resource requirements of an application to the most suitable resources in the testbed. Key concepts are guaranteed advance reservation of Grid and network resources and bandwidth on demand for the end-user. Moreover, we also contributed to the development of an MPI version for distributed computing.
A new generation of scientific applications is emerging that couples scientific instruments, data and high-end computing resources distributed in a global scale. Developed by collaborative, virtual communities, many of these applications have requirements such as determinism (guaranteed QoS), shared data spaces, large data transfers, that are often achievable only through dedicated optical bandwidth.
High capacity optical networking can satisfy bandwidth and latency requirements, but software tools and frameworks for end-to-end, on-demand provisioning of network services need to be developed in coordination with other resources (CPU and storage) and need to span multiple administrative and network technology domains.
In response to the above requirements, PHOSPHORUS will address some of the key technical challenges to enable on-demand e2e network services across multiple domains. The PHOSPHORUS network concept and test-bed will make applications aware of their complete Grid resources (computational and networking) environment and capabilities, and able to make dynamic, adaptive and optimized use of heterogeneous network infrastructures connecting various high-end resources.
PHOSPHORUS will enhance and demonstrate solutions that facilitate vertical and horizontal communication among applications middleware, existing Network Resource Provisioning Systems, and the proposed Grid-GMPLS Control Plane. The PHOSPHORUS assessment will rely on experimental activities on a distributed test-bed interconnecting European and Worldwide optical infrastructures. Specifically, the test-bed will involve European NRENs and national test-beds, as well as GEANT2, Cross Border Dark Fibre Initiative and GLIF infrastructures. A set of highly demanding applications will be adapted to prove the concept.
PHOSPHORUS will disseminate procedures, toolkits and middleware to the EU NRENs and their users, such as Supercomputing centres and the wider European and worldwide scientific users.
Framework Programme: FP6-IST – Information Society Technologies: thematic priority under the specific programme “Integrating and strengthening the European research area” (2002-2006).
SmartLM (February 2008 – July 2010)
Grid-friendly software licensing for location independent application execution
SmartLM developed and implemented a generic and flexible licensing virtualisation technology for new service-oriented business models across organisation boundaries.
The existing licensing models for commercial applications are focusing on software used on compute resources within an administrative domain. A problem occurs when we want to use this software in a distributed service oriented infrastructure where the resources are often not in the same administrative domain that hosts the license server which is authorizing the application use. Today licenses usually are bound to hardware within the domain of the user and do not allow access from outside thus enforcing local use of the protected applications only. The Grid approach in contrary is about using distributed resources from different domains. The experience made in many recent projects trying to use commercial applications in Grid systems clearly indicates a technological barrier of current licensing mechanisms that must be overcome before the Grid becomes a fully commercial productive environment.
SMARTLM solution is to implement licenses as Grid services thus providing platform-independent access just like other Grid resources. Service Level Agreements based on evolving standards will then govern licenses. Depending on the level of trust signed or encrypted, agreements will be used to transport licenses through the Grid to the resource to which a user has been granted access to execute his application tasks. The agreement on a license and the conditions of use for an application will be reached through negotiation between service providers and service customers.
SMARTLM will provide new generic licensing virtualization technology based on standards as WS-Agreement and WS-Negotiation and integrate it in the major Grid middlewares. The project will also identify new service-oriented business models for this approach. A number of widely-used license-protected commercial applications will be adapted to be executed under control of the new licensing mechanisms and will become part of a highly quality show-case to convince more code-owners to adapt their applications.
After the end of the funded period two project partners agreed to enhance the project results and to produce a commercial product called elasticLM providing License as a Service (LaaS). elasticLM was then used in the two Fortissimo projects for protecting software with flexible licensing suitable for distributed HPC computing. The development of elasticLM was discontinued after it has been use successfully in the Fortissimo projects.

CoreGRID ERCIM Working Group (October 2008 – December 2012)
CoreGRID continues as ERCIM Working Group
After four years of research and development, cooperation and dissemination, CoreGRID has indeed carved out a place for itself in the international Grid research arena. With 330 researchers from 46 European research institutions, it has become one of the largest research centres in Grid computing, encompassing a vast range of research topics such as knowledge and data management, programming models, middleware, resource management and scheduling, workflow, service infrastructures and peer-to-peer systems, just to cite a few. It has now reached its ideal objective: to become the European Grid beacon.
CoreGRID’s significant and promising research results in Grid computing are largely promoted at the occasion of the CoreGRID Symposium. This successful event, jointly organized with the Euro-Par 2008 conference gathered hundred key researchers and industrials in Grid research, as well as from international projects in the field. According to Thierry Priol (INRIA) in charge of CoreGRID’s scientific co-ordination and of the symposium’s organization, “The objective of this event was to definitely demonstrate CoreGRID leadership in Grid research”.
Having been active for four years, CoreGRID has now reached a highly visible position: it is recognized worldwide. It is really satisfying for the CoreGRID researchers to see that their work has been influential in the development of new technologies and products and has contributed to the European economy’s growth. It is also an enthusiastic determination for all CoreGRID partners to continue to work together and address new research challenges under this new status of ERCIM Working Group. CoreGRID is more than ever committed to involving further industrial stakeholders in making determinant contributions to Europe’s Next Generation Grid vision.
OPTIMIS (June 2010 – May 2013)
Optimized Infrastructure Services
With the challenges of service and infrastructure providers as the point of departure, OPTIMIS focuses on open, scalable and dependable service platforms and architectures that allow flexible and dynamic provision of advanced services.
The OPTIMIS innovations can be summarized as a combination of technologies to create a dependable ecosystem of providers and consumers that will be the foundation of an efficacious operation of services and infrastructures. This includes innovations for optimizing the whole service lifecycle, starting from service construction. Trust, risk, eco-efficiency and cost are all crucial for optimizing deployment and execution, capturing the essence of the optimized cloud ecosystem produced by the trust on consumers and providers and the risk of not accomplishing specific ecological or economical goals. Adaptive self-preservation is key to meet predicted and unforeseen changes in resource requirements.
Identification of new market roles and value activities calls for new business models and investigations of legal and regulatory aspects for governing cloud operation.Part of the OPTIMIS outcome will be architectures, an open specification, and a software toolkit for provisioning of sustainable IT services capable of satisfying key societal and economical needs. OPTIMIS will support the requirements of a variety of scenarios central to the next generation cloud service ecosystem by providing a toolkit with a set of key tools accompanied by reference architectures illustrating their use in a few scenarios of broad interest.
The scenarios in focus are (1) service providers utilizing cloud bursting to complement local capacity for peak loads, (2) service providers making use of multiple clouds, and (3) infrastructure providers subcontracting resources in a cloud federation. A core of the OPTIMS Toolkit is the OPTIMIS Base Toolkit comprising tools for assessing and managing aspects of trust, risk, eco-efficiency, and cost. By addressing the whole service lifecycle, taking into account the multitude of future cloud architectures, and a by taking a holistic approach to sustainable service provisioning, OPTIMIS provides a revolutionizing foundation for a reliable, sustainable, and trustful cloud market.
The project released its results in several Open Source toolkits for Cloud providers. After the project ended the entire developmements have been transferred to the Open Source project OpenNebula for further use and exploitation.

Fortissimo (July 2013 – December 2016)
The one-stop-shop for SMEs to access advanced simulation services on a pay-per use base
Fortissimo and Fortissimo 2 are collaborative projects that enable European SMEs to be more competitive globally through the use of simulation services running on a High Performance Computing cloud infrastructure. SCAI contributes to Fortissimo 1 and 2 with its expertise in two technology domains:
- advanced data analytics for big amounts of numerical simulation data and
- flexible licensing mechanisms for pay-per-use models in clouds.
The importance of advanced simulation to the competitiveness of both large and small companies is well established. The principal objective of Fortissimo is to enable European manufacturing, particularly small to medium enterprises (SMEs), to benefit from the efficiency and competitive advantage inherent in the use of simulation. However, the simulation of, for example, high-pressure gas cylinders, the moulding of plastics or the thermodynamic properties of hazardous materials requires enormous computing power and specialised software tools and services. Generally, large companies, which have a greater pool of skills and resources, find access to advanced simulation easier than SMEs which can neither afford expensive High Performance Computing equipment nor the licensing cost for the relevant tools. This means that SMEs are not able to take advantage of advanced simulation, even though it can clearly make them more competitive. The goal of Fortissimo is to overcome this impasse through the provision of simulation services running on a cloud infrastructure making use of High Performance Computing systems also making appropriate skills and tools available in a distributed, internet-based environment.
Fortissimo will make advanced simulation more easily accessible, particularly to SMEs, through the realisation of a “one-stop shop” where hardware, expertise, applications, visualisation and tools will be easily available and affordable on a pay-per-use basis. In doing this it will create and demonstrate a sustainable commercial ecosystem where actors at all levels in the value chain can realise sufficient commercial benefit to enable that ecosystem to persist independently of EU funding and continue to provide affordable services to manufacturing industry, particularly SMEs.
Fortissimo will be driven by end-user requirements where (~50) business-relevant application experiments will be used to develop, test and demonstrate both the infrastructure and the “one-stop pay-per-use shop”. The project participants represent all actors in the value chain. Not only will Fortissimo contribute to the increased competitiveness of European manufacturing industry through the innovative infrastructure that it will develop and test, but it will create commercial opportunities for European Independent Software Vendors, as well as for service and High Performance Computing infrastructure providers, through the creation of a new market for their products and services. Fortissimo places considerable emphasis on the exploitation of opportunities at all levels of the value chain ranging from the end-user to the High Performance Computing infrastructure provider.
Fortissimo involves 1,948.5 months of effort, a total cost of €21.9m and EC funding of €16m over a duration of three years, commensurate with achieving its ambitious goals.
Fortissimo 2 (November 2015 – December 2018)
Addressing the adoption of next generation ICT advances in the manufacturing domain
Fortissimo 2 will drive the uptake of advanced modelling, simulation and data analytics by European engineering and manufacturing SMEs and mid-caps. Such an uptake will deliver improved design processes, better products and services, and improved competitiveness. For the European Union as a whole this means improved employment opportunities and economic growth.
The importance of advanced ICT to the competitiveness of both large and small companies in the engineering and manufacturing domain is well established. Despite early successes in this area, there are still many barriers to the uptake of such solutions, not least of which are the initial cost and complexity of adoption, particularly in the context of challenging trading conditions. This proposal targets the ICT Innovation for Manufacturing SMEs (I4MS) action line (Phase 2) and builds on Phase 1 of that initiative.
Phase 2 addresses the adoption of next generation ICT advances in the manufacturing domain. At the core of Fortissimo 2 are three tranches of Application Experiments (~35 in total). An initial set is included in this proposal and two further sets will be obtained through Open Calls for proposals. These experiments will be driven by the requirements of first-time users (predominately SMEs) and will bring together actors from across the value chain, from cycle providers to domain experts via the Fortissimo Marketplace. This will enable innovative solutions to manufacturing challenges, leading to new and improved design processes, products and services. A key feature of Fortissimo 2 will be the adaption of the Marketplace to meet the needs of end-users. It will offer a responsive and reliable service to companies which want to access HPC and Big resources and expertise.
Fortissimo 2 initially involves 732 months of effort, a total cost of €11.1m and EC funding of €10m over a duration of three years, commensurate with achieving its ambitious goals.

StandICT.eu – Supporting European Experts Presence in International Standardisation Activities in ICT
In the context of the last framework programme Horizon 2020 the European Commission identified both the relevance of ICT standards for Europe and a lack of European contribution to international standards developments. As a consequence, the EC called for project proposals to reinforce European presence in international ICT standardisation. The project funding scheme was Coordination and Support Action (CSA).
StandICT.eu defines a pragmatic approach to reinforcing EU expert presence in international ICT standardisation. By setting up, managing & monitoring a continuous open call, StandICT.eu will provide a streamlined process supporting the participation & contribution of EU specialists in SDOs & SSOs in the 5 essential building blocks of the Digital Single Market (DSM), viz.: cloud computing, 5G communications, IoT, cybersecurity & data technologies.
Through a Standards Watch, StandICT.eu maps & monitors the international ICT standards landscape & then liaises with SDOs, SSOs & industry-led groups, identifying gaps & priorities which match EU DSM objectives: These will become topics for the continuous open call. Engagement will be supported through a series of motivational drivers, maximising impact & high-level commitment to standardisation from a broad stakeholder base. Specifying & strategically addressing DSM standardisation challenges, StandICT.eu analyses how to bolster EU’s presence and influence in international ICT standardisation & importantly the business impact on digital transformation on industry & consumers in strategic sectors such as eHealth, smart energy, intelligent transport systems & advanced manufacturing.

Summary of the results achieved (in German)
D-Grid (September 2005 – March 2012)
D-Grid is the German Grid Initiative which had its concluding conference with presentations of findings and results in 2012. It was pursued as part of the European Grid Initiative (EGI).
Since the start of the D-Grid project on September 1st, 2005, six community projects and the D-Grid Integration Project (DGI) have been working on building a sustainable Grid infrastructure for Germany. More than 15 community projects have been carried out in various application areas, ranging from high-energy physics to financial services. The projects use this infrastructure and supplement it with their own community-specific developments. Based on this infrastructure, e-science technologies will be introduced in the German scientific community. The community projects and the integration project are jointly developing the basic and sustainable grid infrastructure that will be available to all German research in the future. Particular attention is paid to the development of sustainable services to be offered by both academic and commercial institutions.
The Fraunhofer Institute SCAI was involved in the community projects InGrid, ProGrid and PartnerGRID as well as in the integration project DGI. Work on two sub-projects of DGI has already been completed: Management of Virtual Organizations (VO) in D-Grid (VO-Management Project) and the integration and interoperability of VO-Management technologies in D-Grid. (IVOM project). SCAI is currently involved in the DGI sub-project AAI/VO, which lays the foundations for a D-Grid-wide AAI in the context of the management of virtual organizations in the communities. Since the middle of the year, SCAI has also been involved in the two new projects D-Grid Scheduler Interoperability (DGSI) and SLA4D-Grid.
DGI – The D-Grid Integration Project
As part of the D-Grid initiative, the D-Grid integration project DGI is building the sustainable grid infrastructure for e-science in Germany. In this context, the DGI acts as a provider of grid services and grid resources for all German research. For this purpose, the developments of the community projects are integrated into the integration project through close cooperation between DGI and community projects. The following areas form the basis for sustainable developments in the D-Grid:
Subject 1: FG 1: »D-Grid Basic Software«. Supports other projects and groups on the grid with basic grid software. For this purpose, various middleware packages are made available and the research groups of the communities are supported in using this software. In particular, developments for accessing large amounts of data in the grid are carried out, which are of particular importance for numerous research groups.
Subject 2: “Setting up and operating the D-Grid infrastructure”. In this department, a core D-Grid is being set up to test the operation. Furthermore, investigations into the interoperability and performance evaluation of resources are carried out, as well as developments in the area of monitoring and accounting.
Subject 3: »Networks and Security«. Basic services are developed to ensure the security of the virtual organizations among themselves and between VO, resource providers and users. In particular, a uniform security policy will be developed for the entire D-Grid infrastructure.
Subject 4: The “D-Grid project management” integrates the results of the DGI and the community projects into a general D-Grid platform. Questions about sustainability and long-term business models are also dealt with.
VO-Management (January 2006 – December 2007)
Management of Virtual Organisations in D-Grid
Reliable authentication and authorization are crucial for both service providers and their customers, where the former want to protect their resources from unauthorised access and fraudulent use their customers want to be sure unauthorised access to their data is prevented. In Grid environments Virtual Organisations (VO) have been adopted as a means to organise and control access to resources and data based on roles that are assigned to users.
VO-Management is a D-Grid Infrastructure (DGI) project that aims to provide support for VO management. The project will create a framework concept for VO-Management taking into account the requirements of the different D-Grid Communities and the heterogeneous middleware supported in D-Grid. The proposed framework will include the definition of processes for the temporal integration of resources, services, and applications for community use. VO management implements the essential interface between the D-Grid service providers and the communities.
The first phase of the project was dedicated to examine existing solutions like Shibboleth or VOMS, to determine the needs and requirements of both the communities and the service providers, and to develop the concept for VO management in D-Grid. As a result of this work a draft framework concept has been produced now being circulated within the D-Grid Communities for final revision.
In the second phase the software and documentation and a description of the procedures necessary for the operation of Virtual Organisations in D-Grid will be bundled and made available via the VO-Management Web-pages.
Project partners are the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich, and the Fraunhofer Institute SCAI Sankt Augustin.
IVOM (October 2006 – March 2008)
Interoperability and Integration of VO-Management Technologies in D-Grid
Based on the preceeding project VO-Management this project aims at developing an integrated and interoerable technology for VO-Management across the D-Grid middleware stacks. For Grids today a number of technologies for authorisation are in place, the most prominent being variants of role-based and attribute-based techniques. However, the degree of support for these techniques varies between the different middleware and there is little or no interoperability between the approaches. D-Grid features three middleware systems: gLite, Globus Toolkit 4 (GT4), and UNICORE 5. While to one end current versions of UNICORE and GT4 do not have any notion of VOs on the other end gLite is the ecosystem of the role-based VOMS, the Virtual Organisation Membership Service. During the last years a number of international projects emerged aiming to provide attribute-based authorisation based on Shibboleth for GT4, the most mature development being GridShib.
Surveys carried out in the VO-Management project and the AAI project indicated, that the different Communities in D-Grid have different preferences with respect to VO-Management, e.g. the High Energy Physics Community prefers VOMS, a central VO-Management, while other Communities like the Climate Research Community are in favour of Shibboleth approaches. Finally, UNICORE based Communities make use of UNICORE internal authorisation mechanisms only. Using different systems for the management of VOs D-Grid bears the risk compromising the goal of a common and general Grid infrastructure.
The IVOM project focuses on integrating the major VO-Management technologies for the D-Grid middleware. This includes the integration of Shibboleth into the D-Grid infrastructure and the extension of the VO-Management. Inter alia IVOM will:
- implement a comprehensive VO-Management including the integration of GT4, gLite and UNICORE, allowing a uniform management of users and rights for authentication and authorisation independent from the Grid middleware used,
- provide mechanisms through the introduction of Shibboleth allowing Communities with a large number of users to access Grid services without a massive rollout of user certificates,
- enhance UNICORE to both using VOMS role-based authorisation and Shibboleth authentication mechanisms and attribute-based authorisation.

AAI/VO (October 2007 – September 2010)
Authentication and authorization infrastructure with Attributes
In the “Coordination and Security Management” work package, security issues that arise in the D-Grid are bundled and their processing coordinated. Active cooperation with other departments of the D-Grid Infrastructure Project (DGI-2) and with the communities is also organised. The overarching goal of the work package is the coordination, advice and implementation of the security activities in D-Grid with special consideration of the sustainable security of corresponding central services. In the AAI/VO work package, the work carried out in DGI-1 and IVOM in the area of authentication and authorization infrastructure (AAI) is continued in the D-Grid. The purely identity-based authorization of the D-Grid is to be expanded so that a user can also be authorized based on attributes. A distinction must be made between VO attributes (VO subgroups, user roles), which are decentrally defined and maintained within VO management, and campus attributes (name, affiliation and roles in an organization), which are managed decentrally by the home organizations of the users will. The use of these attributes is intended to enable fine-grained authorization on D-Grid resources. For the subsequent integration of this attribute-based authorization into the D-Grid infrastructure, priority should be given to using existing techniques. Previous work has revealed situations in which individual users or entire communities cannot use long-lived user certificates for administrative reasons. For this scenario, short-lived certificates based on a Shibboleth federation offer a powerful and scalable solution. The DFN’s Short-Lived Certificate Service (SLCS) translates the identities from the existing identity management systems into short-lived X.509 certificates, which can then be used in the grid as before.
DGSI (March 2009 – February 2012)
D-Grid Scheduler Interoperability
An advantage of large federations of research communities with different, heterogeneous resources such as the D-Grid lies in the possibility of using resources jointly if necessary in order to overcome their own capacity bottlenecks or requirements with regard to special properties of the resources that cannot be met locally. offset by using resources from another community.
However, these advantages of a Grid infrastructure can only be used to a limited extent, since different, not directly compatible systems are usually used in the communities for the management of local resources. A further obstacle lies in the – desired – autonomy of the communities, which prevents a remote community from having direct access to the local systems for resource management.
The Gap project »DGSI« designs and develops an interoperability layer for scheduling in service grids that allows users of one community to run workloads on resources owned and managed by another community. The fact that the individual, specialized scheduling solutions of the communities will continue to exist should be taken into account in particular.
For this purpose, the existing systems of various service grids are connected to the interoperability layer as part of the project. This procedure also ensures that the computing and storage resources available in the D-Grid can be made available to all communities in the long term. Furthermore, the project, in cooperation with the SLA layer, aims to be able to assure users of quality guarantees for the execution of their workload. The implementation is consistently based on recognized open standards in order to strengthen the interoperability of D-Grid in an international context.
The approach provides both access to resources through job scheduling and a Cloud-line resoruce delegation which virtually integrates remote resouces into the local resource pool.

SLA4D-Grid (June 2009- May 2012)
Service Level Agreements for the D-Grid
The growing number of users and applications in the D-Grid, which require a previously defined quality of service to fulfill their tasks, makes it necessary to introduce a general procedure for a binding service level agreement.
The SLA4D-Grid project designs and implements a Service Level Agreement layer (SLA layer) for the D-Grid. This layer is located between the D-Grid middleware ( gLite, Globus, UNICORE ) and the user level of the D-Grid and is integrated into the existing infrastructure (among other things by connecting to selected core D-Grid services). Communities can use the SLA layer either via special clients or via an interface. The SLA layer is a value-added service and does not affect the current use of the D-Grid, does not intervene in the operation of communities without a need for SLAs and thus allows a seamless transfer of the results from SLA4D-Grid to regular operation. In addition to the guarantee of quality of service, the Service Level Agreement layer offers individual users, entire D-Grid communities, as well as the providers of D-Grid resources the guarantee of resource use under economic conditions. For this purpose, quality of service requests and the corresponding offers are brought together in a binding manner by means of service level agreements.
Using the SLA layer and with the help of other D-Grid services such as monitoring or accounting, SLAs can be automatically created, negotiated and compliance monitored, so that the D-Grid can be used by academic and industrial users in an economically efficient manner according to their respective business models.
German BMWI-funded projects
Here you find information on the cloud4health project I initiated with colleagues funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWI). The project was developing a secure, trustworthy and data-protection rules compliant infrastructure for secondary use of patient data. The anonymised unstructured data from different sources are examined with text mining using Grid computing infrastructure.
cloud4health (December 2011 – November 2014)
Cloud computing for big data analysis in medicine
The cloud4health project opens up large medical raw data stocks for data protection-compliant evaluation of a wide range of questions from research, quality assurance and health economics. In contrast to many other projects involving the secondary use of clinical raw data, cloud4health aims to automatically process unstructured data such as free texts, doctor’s letters and surgical reports and to open them up for further analysis.
To do this, the approach combines text analysis and data warehouse technologies and can be provided as a private or public cloud, depending on requirements. One of the challenges of this project is the generic, scalable design and data protection-compliant provision of cloud-based services and the development of a sustainable business model.
A total of three application scenarios will be implemented during the project period:
- the extraction and evaluation of information from anonymous patient data on the surgical treatment of hip joints;
- the development of procedures for the automated plausibility and profitability check of medical treatments;
- the early identification of undesirable side effects of newly introduced drugs with the help of automated processes.
A first prototype was realized by spring 2013, demonstrating the consistent processing of structured and unstructured data from the clinical data warehouse, local anonymization, text mining in the cloud and use by a central study portal.
In addition to the scientific exploitation, the project is particularly important for the economy and was therefore also presented at trade fairs and events such as Cebit or ConHIT. The project has thus also become a beacon for the legally compliant use of health data in the cloud.
Within the cloud4health project, SCAI focuses on a secure platform for text mining workflows that can easily and efficiently be deployed in private and public cloud infrastructures. SCAI designs and implements processes and workflows for text mining on clinical data, providing the resulting text mining platform to users from participating clinics. The platform will be made available to external users after the end of the project. This includes setting up and providing the initial cloud IaaS infrastructure for the text mining platform to be developed. Furthermore, SCAI implements the mechanisms to protect the data from unauthorised access, provides the mechanisms for authentication and authorization for accessing data.
